Maybe it's possible for us to come up with a social contract under which we collectively pretend that floods like the last one just didn't happen? It feels like a lot of us enjoy each others suffering in a way that is inevitably going to come back around and make our lives uncomfortable at a later date.

Comrades, has anyone else noticed that Howie seems... particularly unlike himself, lately?

[Private to Howie]

Excuse me Comrade, I was wondering if I could ask you some questions about God?

That whole post was just confusing, Comrade. And normally I expect Howie to resolve these kinds of issues and make lists about them.

I think there's something wrong with him. Maybe he feels unappreciated?

Wasn't he attempting to crack down on rather mundane things previously?

He was. Sexby says maybe he feels like we don't listen to him. Maybe we could start demonstrably listening to everything he says?

I never listen to anyone unquestionably. So I'm afraid if Mr. Howie's become so desperate for attention he's resorted to disinterest, I've no cure for what ails him.

I don't think it's the same as wanting attention, Comrade. I think what he wants is to actually convince the other wardens here to do the right thing, and if, after being here for years and persevering for that long without ever treating anyone unfairly, he's finally come to the conclusion that his continual efforts are always ignored, so he should just not bother...

Then Comrade, I think we should at least try and find a cure for that. You're an extraterrestrial genius who's had multiple lifetimes to amass knowledge and experience about this, so I don't know why you're saying that you can't help!

I have. And I've bothered to talk to wardens and inmates alike, good and bad, in attempt to get a feel for what they want and how they can help each other. If that's the case, he's simply lost touch with what people need and is simply trying to cling to what he's used to. Actually helping people in a way that isn't buried in procedure would do him a great benefit.

But, as I mentioned, I don't know the man very well. [Resigned.] Any approach by myself might be taken as an affront, and as I mentioned, my time ship isn't feeling well. When she's upset, it's difficult to keep my head clear.

Comrade, there are lots of people here who help wardens and inmates by doing what you do, by talking to people and trying to feel them out and not passing judgment, but Comrade, sometimes we don't need that. Sometimes we need an advocate to tell us, as a collective, that something is wrong, and Sam did that, and Howie did that, and neither of them made a lot of friends, or got a lot of praise for it.

[Pause.]

Okay, I'll talk to him myself Comrade.

Please do so. And I apologize that I can't be of more help in this instance.
