It's come to my attention that we got a few new faces recently come into town. Now, I ain't doubting that the most of you are just decent, law abiding folk who I hope to come to know as fellow citizens of this fair camp. I just wanna take the chance to say howdy to Y'all, and make myself known. The name's John Prefect, and round these parts I am the law. Now, y'all have chosen a pretty rough and tumble place to come rest your boots here, but the people are decent, and you got any problems, I would humbly fuckin' urge you to bring to me or one'a my deputies.

Sheriff Prefect. Would you happen to be acquainted with a US Marshal named Thornberry?

[Prefect's voice instantly goes polite and soft in tone. Because it don't do no good to be upsetting Mrs Pearson.]

I'm afraid not, Maam. Ain't got much stock with the US Marshals myself.

Well, there was a Marshal Thornberry done stopped by my house last night, looking for a place to stay. When I mentioned all the talk we've been hearing about those outlaws, he got antsy and said he needed to ride off to see to his kin outside of town.

Now he seemed mighty plausible and I don't doubt anyone would be worried at a time like this, but I don't mind admitting that something seemed a mite shifty about him.

Hm. Funny a Marshal should hear talk of outlaws, and think it wise to ride off into the night without some truly urgent cause hanging upon him.

You couldn't possibly furnish me with a thorough description of this man, could you?

I can, Sheriff. Dark hair, mustache. Well-set-up sort of fellow, good clothes, though I reckon they'd seen better days. So's his marshal's badge. Got quite a set of spurs, too, and a big old gun. His horse was dark brown, maybe a bay -- wasn't enough light to tell.

Hm. Thank you kindly for bringing this to my attention, Maam. If you think of anything else you remember about him, then you come let me know; and if he comes back again then don't you let him in.

I will, Sheriff. The good Lord willing, it'll all be neither here nor there.
