Comrades! Consumers! Let us never be disheartened by recent traumas and let us remember that this kind of thing happens all the time here. We lose our identities, and we turn on each other, and we forget who we are, and we vanish into the aether and we... we continue, Comrades. We persist.

I've started to think that when the floods aren't too traumatic, and when we don't fall overboard into ports that want to kill us, and when people aren't trying to kill one another quite so enthusiastically, and when the vampires aren't starving and when there are no bears around...

...

I don't think I hate it here anymore.

Sometimes... sometimes, someone'll say something, or do something, or ask me to do something, and... I'll know that it's wrong. I'll know that there's a regulation against it somewhere, but... I don't remember what it is anymore. I don't remember why I can't do it anymore. I still miss my home. I miss the Factory, but sometimes I don't-- I don't remember what it is I miss about it. The details are fuzzy, I can't pick them out as well anymore.

It scares me, Comrades, but this place is starting to feel like my home.

There is very little I wouldn't do for something to drink, right now.

[O'Brien peered in the drawer curiously, only giving the previous ones a cursory look, because the torn up one made him stop in his tracks.] What happened to this, comrade? [This wasn't even an important question, just a curiosity.

He did as Prefect said and moved on to the next question,] What use are that many roses to anyone, comrade? [O'Brien didn't quite understand this. It was just so far from anything he knew.]

[Prefect gave a slight apologetic smile.] Two Face happened. He didn't like the concept of evaluating me.

[And at O'Brien's question in regards to the roses, he hesitated.]

Ah, that would be confidential, I'm afraid.

Alright, comrade. [O'Brien settled for that, fairly sure of the orthodoxy of it, and picked up the measuring tape, a little confused.] So... aren't you going to be the same height as last time?

[A long pause, and another thought hits him,] Who is Two Face?

[Prefect frowned, looking slightly indignant!] I might have grown, Comrade! Or shrunk! Poor nutrition can do that to you! [He assumed.]

Two Face is Harvey Dent's alternate personality. He's under control now, but he wasn't when that evaluation was done.

[O'Brien sighed, and nodded. He'd already put the height in, after looking at the other one, but it was all about appearance anyway, wasn't it. As long as Prefect thought he was measuring him, he was, right?] Alright, stand up straight, comrade. [There was a faint air of 'this is pointless', but he tried to repress it.]

Ah, I see. So he won't... do the same to this one now, comrade?

[Prefect straightened up for O'Brien, waiting for the man to fulfill his task.]

No, Comrade. I think he only tore that one up because he emerged when Harvey was conducting the evaluation for me. I doubt it would come up again.

[O'Brien set about measuring him, not speaking until he'd scribbled down some numbers in the set boxes,] Oh, I see. So Harvey wouldn't object, comrade? [He was a little unused to using anyone's first name as a term of reference, but he wasn't actually sure of the last. That meant a mental note to update his notes was in order.]

[Prefect gave a slight shrug.] I don't know, Brother. I think... he probably would object, not enough to rip up my evaluation forms though.

[O'Brien shrugged,] No matter, comrade, this is between us. I...think I've done it all, comrade.

[Prefect turned, smiling, to reach for the sheet, before hesitating for a moment, as though something unpleasent had just occurred to him.]

Is it... is it good, Comrade?

I answered honestly, comrade. It's good in places, but there's a lot of room for massive improvement, comrade. [He winced,] It probably should have been done more often, then I wouldn't have had to put some of these things. [He knew he'd been particularly - well, honest - harsh when asked about Prefect's existing records, as well as in a few other places. The questions which made no sense to O'Brien, he'd been generous on for not knowing what else to put, but there was nothing strictly untrue. He just held people to a high standard.]

Better I answer properly than be nice, comrade.

[There was a thought lingering in the back of his brain, but he wasn't sure if he should ask it of Prefect.]

[Prefect nods, looking a little disheartened as he accepts the evaluation form and begins to read over it.]

Thank you, Brother. That is better, of course. Our standards must be standard.

[Go on, O'Brien. Ask. You know you want too.]

[O'Brien pauses and decided that he had to ask him, for sanity's sake.]

We don't do anything like this, comrade, but if I were to give you a list of... orthodox principles, could you tell me how well I am adhering to them, comrade?

[He was worried. Actually quite worried.]

[Prefect literally beams at O'Brien.]

Comrade, I would be more than happy to do so! Make a list of any length at all and I will evaluate your adherence to it!
From: [identity profile] equalsfive.livejournal.com
[O'Brien actually seemed incredibly relieved that he'd agreed,]

Thank you, comrade. [It was a matter of shame he'd even had to ask, but he thought this was possibly the best way of maintaining orthodoxy.] I shall write one and give you a hard copy at some point soon.
From: [identity profile] buywithme.livejournal.com
[Prefect simply nodded, cheerily, O'Brien's discomfort about this whole thing completely passing him by.]

Please, Brother! It's my pleasure! In fact, I'm glad to have the opportunity to thank you for doing this for me!
From: [identity profile] equalsfive.livejournal.com
[He gave him a perfunctory nod,] Alright, comrade, I'll bring you something soon... Is there anything else I need to do, comrade, or can I leave?
From: [identity profile] buywithme.livejournal.com
[The packing tape loomed ominously over the proceedings, but Prefect cleared his throat, pointedly ignoring it.]

I believe you've covered everything here, Comrade. Thank you.
From: [identity profile] equalsfive.livejournal.com
[O'Brien wouldn't have known about the packing tape unless it was specifically mentioned. So it was for the best, and he just went to leave.]

Most welcome, comrade.
