Comrades! Consumers! Haven't we had a flood of unfamiliar faces lately? Well allow me to personally greet each and every one of you to the Barge. My name is Prefect, and I am the sole operator of the Factories single outlet here.

Comrades, I know this may be difficult for you, I know that you've awoken in a strange new place, far from home, I know you feel pressured and dominated and confused, but brothers, sisters, do not let your hearts be troubled. This place will tear at your minds and your hearts, destroy your body and each time allow you to rise from the ashes of that flesh like a scalding phoenix from the flames, it is a place forever in flux, forever changing. It is impermanent. The only way now to anchor ourselves is to build our own physical empires, Comrades, you are no longer your body or your mind or your primitive notions of soul, you are only what you surround yourself with! That is what abides, that is what remains.

So Comrades, Consumers, Brothers and Sisters, do not dwell in the realm of ever fleeting consciousness, but rather buy with me, the building blocks of who or what you are so that when your mind is torn away from you your foundations are still firm! Bicycles, balaclavas, ballet shoes, blue-ray players, boxer shorts, bottles, berets, baskets, basketballs, just a small number of the things we currently have in stock, and Comrades if we are unable to find what you require in our existing stores then rest assured, our staff will do literally whatever is possible to acquire what you need elsewhere, and all of this for the lowest prices possible.

Comrades, in the hours of your discontent, in the moments when this place at the end of time and space and history tries to drag you apart, ask yourself this:

Will I be lost? Will I be the one who falls first with no solid hold to grip onto? Will my mind be the first not to return?

Comrades, do not let it be so. Buy with me today, and we shall chain ourselves to this reality with the endless glory of commerce and products, in this ever fluctuating reality, we shall build our own, buy with me now, and make it so.

[Private to Jayne]

Comrade? I've been asked to contact you on behalf of someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

Prefect, you know that products aren't going to tie you to reality.

I don't know that they don't? I mean, sometimes when the floods end, the objects stay, and everyone's eventually become themselves again, and everyone has some stuff, so maybe it helps.

But has owning a bunch of stuff done anything to keep you from becoming somebody else when the wrong flood hits? Maybe some things, some items with emotional significance may help trigger something, but...

Sometimes stuff is just stuff, Prefect.

From: [identity profile] buywithme.livejournal.com
Right. Stuff is stuff that reminds you that you're the person who bought all the stuff.

Maybe the stuff is what brings you back.

Look, I don't think you're... entirely wrong on this. But just accumulating things for the sake of it, that doesn't help define you. It's those special objects, the ones that... somebody you love gave you, that remind you of the most important days of your life.

A pile of products, it's different from those really significant things. I buy 500 biro pens from you, let's say, just 'cause I wanted to purchase something. When the wrong flood hits, I'm not gonna look at those pens and remember who I am. I'm gonna look at my badge, or the cigarette card my dad gave me...

Am I making any sense to you at all?

No, Prefect, I do not want 500 Biros.

But Comrade, what about those times when you and your 499 friends all need to write or draw simultaneously? What about three years from now when you would otherwise have expended all your other pen related avenues? You could still have a good hundred pens left!

Look, enough. Don't give me one of your sales pitches. Let's have a real conversation.

Don't you have one thing that's special to you? I mean, one thing that's special in a way that isn't connected to the Factory, but it's all yours, tied up in a memory that you never want to let go of?

'Anymore'? What happened?

And what do you mean by 'get better'?

No, something has happened, otherwise you wouldn't have qualified your statement with 'anymore'.

No, there wasn't anything that happened, I just... I talked about it with someone, and I decided--

I had to choose who I was going to be, so, I have to be right for the Factory again.

[Sam doesn't even bother responding through the journal. What's the use? It's just another way for Prefect to distance himself from real, human relations. And so, Sam tosses the journal to the side and, fuming, rushes over to his Inmate's room, pounding on the door firmly]

Prefect? It's Sam; open up.

[There's a long pause. Then ever so slowly, Prefects door opens a crack. Then a crack more. Then finally the inmate steps back far enough to admit Sam, he looks decidedly guilty.]

Yes, Comrade?

[Impatiently, Sam enters and shuts the door behind him, before directing his full and undivided attention to Prefect. Yeah, he doesn't miss the look of guilt at all, and it just confirms to him that his instincts were right. Something's very wrong here]

I want you to tell me everything, starting with who convinced you that you suddenly had to make a choice?

[Sam's not playing nice today]

I just... there isn't anything to tell.

[Okay, so right now he's trying to decide whether or not client confidentiality extends to Sylar in this situation.]

[His voice is sharper and more authoritative than usual, like when he's dealing with a particularly difficult witness]

Look at me, and tell me the truth.

[Prefect looks at Sam, then looks away from Sam.]

We were just-- we were playing chess, and we just... we just talked about it.

[That's putting it particularly gently. Prefect takes a great interest in his shoes as he gives this answer. He clears his throat a little.]

We talked about it, and... I just... had to choose.

Yeah? And who's "we"?

[He crosses his arms over his chest, then pauses, looks down for a moment and loops his thumbs in his pockets, to try to adopt a less stand-offish stance. Then, he looks at Prefect again]

Why? Why did you 'have' to choose?
