[Was it normal for hugs to last this long? Prefect decided that Barron had probably done more of them than he had, so he should allow this to continue.]

It's really not your fault, Comrade. Things like this happen to me quite a lot, I think I'm just... exceptionally unlucky.

[Barron sighed, just a bit and leaned forward to hug Prefect again. Well, it had worked once, hadn't it?]

[Prefect frowned, and gave an irritated little sigh, exhaling against his inmate's cheek.]

Comrade, look at it this way: If you've messed with anyone else's memories, then now that your power is gone, in a few days, they are going to figure out what you've done. Now, do I need to worry about someone coming to try and hurt you for that, Comrade? Just say yes or no, you don't need to give me any other information than that?

[Barron hugged that little bit harder. Probably enough to hurt.]

That doesn't mean anything. That just means that O'Brien is good at talking people into going along with his little scheme. I don't think they'll hurt me over it.

[Prefect winced, that was some unnecessarily affectionate hugging right there.]

Barron! [His voice raised a little, involuntarily,] If you've changed anyone else's memories then you have to tell me! I don't want you getting hurt for no reason!

[He paused for a moment, then, abruptly, wrapped his arms around Barron's shoulders, holding on tightly.]

If you don't tell me the truth, I'll get someone to go and check your journals!

[Prefect's raised voice was enough for Barron to loosen his grip, but before he could move back Prefect already had his arms wrapped around his shoulders. It suddenly felt like they were that bit too close, especially when Prefect mentioned the journals. Barron felt a rush of rage, but he kept still, resisting the urge to hurt Prefect. That wasn't going to help.]

If I tell you, you'll tell them. [Barron said slowly.] So what's the point?

[Better not to mention the journals. Not now. But something would have to be done.]

In a few days they'll know anyway, if you tell me who they are then at the very least I can get their wardens to stop them from hurting you when that happens.

[He leaned back slightly, keeping his hands on Barron's arms, still holding on to the other man as he looked him directly in the eyes.]

That's the point, Comrade. You said you were afraid that I was going to die? Well I'm afraid that if you do these things to people, then when they realize, they'll come after you and hurt, or even kill you. And I can't stop them because you won't tell me.

[It was as close to honest as Barron was going to get. The rest of it, the forced closeness and the eye contact, that was a new kind of horrible that Barron wasn't used to. But he looked Prefect straight in the eye. What other options were there?]

Do you really think you'd be able to stop them? [Barron managed a wan smile.] Even people like Arthas?

They're memories that people eventually get back here as well, so yes, I do think they over react about it. [Prefect conceded.] But that doesn't change the fact that you'll end up getting hurt because of it.

[Prefect paused, considering for a moment if he could stop Arthas. He... probably couldn't, if he was perfectly honest, but after a moment, he nodded.]

I think Arthas wouldn't want to kill me again, if he had a choice. So all I would have to do would be to make sure that the only way he could get to you would be through me, and you'd be okay.

[He offered a small, reassuring smile to go with that.]

It's ridiculous. They get them back, so it doesn't even count. [Barron shook his head.] They need to learn to deal with it. It's their problem.

[Barron looked blankly at Prefect's smile. How did Arthas killing them both improve the situation?] I'm smart enough to leave Arthas alone. It won't be a problem. [Barron said after a moment.]

[Prefect allowed the smile to fade now, his expression more serious.] Okay. I believe you, but who didn't you leave alone?

[Barron looked away.] Most people. I didn't go near Dawsey or anyone like that.

[Prefect sighed, his expression crinkling in concern.] All right, Comrade, perhaps we could put together a list? Then we could take off anyone who's definitely not dangerous, and deal with whoever's left.
