Maybe it's possible for us to come up with a social contract under which we collectively pretend that floods like the last one just didn't happen? It feels like a lot of us enjoy each others suffering in a way that is inevitably going to come back around and make our lives uncomfortable at a later date.

Comrades, has anyone else noticed that Howie seems... particularly unlike himself, lately?

[Private to Howie]

Excuse me Comrade, I was wondering if I could ask you some questions about God?

I confess I pay him less attention than most, but... not entirely? He has been definitely more strict upon others, but it is naught I have not seen from the highly religious in my time, when they were particularly concerned or perturbed by things.

Do you think he's upset about something?

[Pause.]

Sorry, Comrade, I've just... become accustomed to the usual pattern of his lengthy moral diatribes, and he's deviating from it.

Tis quite plausible, I admit.

Perhaps, Prefect, he has just come to feel powerless in the face of some things, and knows not what to do. Perhaps he does feel his moral diatribes have got him nowhere but derided, so has simply dismissed the matter.

I know not.

Thank you, Comrade. That makes a lot of sense.

It is the only thing I can think of, sir, though it is a sad indictment on the rest of us that a man feels he must lay down his pen.

I know, especially since even though people made fun of him, he was one of the wardens who usually made sense.

Perhaps we ought to hope that Rayne is right, and he is looking for information elsewhere or... discussing it privately.

I cannot truly account for a man I essentially know as a friend of my wife's. Why do you not ask him?

I don't want him to think I'm criticizing him for not saying anything. I'm asking him questions about God to cheer him up.

...An interesting approach, sir.

I hope it proves successful, but showing a little concern for his well being, if that is how you feel, sir, is not the same as criticising him.

Thank you for your help, Comrade.

I'll talk to him about it.
