My children, I know that we are all very excited by the coming of the Carnival to our little town, and rightly so! For god takes joy in the joy of his children, and sorrow in their loneliness, and there is much to do at such an event without wandering into the clutches of the Devil.

But, Brothers and Sisters, as you go, go with caution, and as you go, go too with your god! And be not tempted by the sin that is brought to our town by such a place, keep your spirit lifted and your soul and body pure and you will be delivered into his great kingdom yet! For the Devil dresses up! He dances and sways his hips and chatters nonsense streams to draw the coin from your purse and your feet to the path of his ways, and the reward that you will take for following his path is that of damnation eternal! So as you walk amongst those brightly lit stalls, beware, and recall the word of your Lord our God:

"You may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous, has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God."

Children, guard that inheritance, so that I might see you again some day at his throne.

I will be holding prayer three times a day from now until the carnival leaves, at nine am, one pm, and five pm. I would like to welcome any of those travellers who seek the light of our lord to attend, and I would be more than happy to guide you towards his glory.


[OOC BIT: Prefect's actually relatively new in town! He was raised by a super religious family in a SIMILAR TINY TOWN, shipped off to a seminary for a bunch of years, and finally ditched here about a year ago, after he was ordained as a priest. His full name is Ezekiel Samuel Prefect (LOL IKR?).

AFTER HE GOT HERE, it took like, TWO MONTHS for Sveta Sophie, to seduce the pants offa him, and they've been having their terrible secret affair ever since.

"That's good, Preacher works for me." [Ezekiel smiles and steps back to lead Kirk into the church with him.]

"Ah, about your soul. Do you mind if I start by asking what you know about or think about religion?"

[Well, Kirk's skin didn't catch on fire when he stepped inside the church. That was probably a good sign.]

"That it's a reason why my girls don't get as much business as they deserve some nights."

[The Preacher gives Kirk a sidelong look. He kind of knows that Kirk's going to be talking about the sexy dancers, but he's just hoping that he's wrong.]

Ah, the thought of a sin is just as black an act as the true commission of it, and I'm afraid I've little doubt that your girls would turn my thoughts to sin.

Because it's still a sin. It hurts yourself, it hurts the world you live in, and it pains the Lord to know of it.

[Prefect frowned, walking with Kirk down the center of the aisle.]

For all the things that you indulge in, all the aspects of life that you allow yourself to enjoy, you said to me today that you were unforgivable. That God would not want a man like you. That time spent upon you was wasted.

Jim, to me that does not sound like a man who is happy with his life.

"I'm doing the best I can with what's been dealt to me and mine, preacher. We can't all be blessed with good fortune and sound morals. And sides, even if I was the kinda man who could make a good, honest living, there ain't work to go around. We're not exactly living the high life these days."

"Jim, while I do believe that your profession is harmful, It ain't in my power to make you stop, and even if it was it wouldn't be right for me to do so. To ask you to pack it up now would be futile posturing, because I know as well as you that you would not and cannot."

[Ezekiel said all of this quite calmly, keeping his voice even.]

"But even a poor man does not have to be unhappy, if he is rich in spirit. If he can see within his life the hand of the Lord, every man can find peace."

[Jim thought long and hard about that, before finally he shook his head and let out something like a sigh.]

"I still don't believe that any God decent folk worship would want anything to do with us scum of the earth."

[The Preacher quoted, before turning to look towards Kirk.]

"All men are sinners, Brother. All men are the scum of the earth. That one is more good than another is just a tale we tell ourselves, because we can not see the world as He sees the world. If a man says: "I am a great man, because I have never sinned", does he not commit the sin of pride? If a woman says, "I shall not speak to you, because you are a wicked man", then does she too not sin, in rejecting one of God's own beloved children?"

[He reached across to place one hand on Kirk's shoulder, holding his other up for the man to see.]

"Do we not both have ten fingers? Do we not both bleed? Are we not both entirely alike, in being made in his image? How could God look down upon us now, as we stand side by side in his house, and love only one of us?"

[Jim had really not been expecting to have this conversation. Every other priest he'd ever talked to had either laughed in his face or... well, something else had happened. No one had really tried for his soul this hard before.

It was kind of unnerving.]

[The hand on Kirk's shoulder gives a reassuring squeeze.]

[Prefect's cool with you doing a bit of a mini retreat, as long as he thinks he can coax you back into his company another time.]
