127 - WHY YOU GOTTA DO THIS, BARRON?

Comrades, if anyone has had any... uh...

[Pause.]

Comrades, could anyone who knows Barron Sharpe personally, just let me know how they first met him?

[BARRON >C]

Comrade, you know, there are normally people who would be prepared to help you with things even if you don't change their memories first?

[Sigh.]

You tried to change Mr. Nygma's memories, and I know that under normal circumstances, being hit on the head with a cane would be considered a punishment, but I think I need to actually punish you for this first, Comrade.

[HOW DOES HE DO THAT? Oh God. Sam only ever told him off and made him feel guilty.]

I... am going to take your shoes. No more shoes allowed. For a month, Comrade.

[ADMIRAL :C]

Please take Barron's shoes away from him.

[Yes, Prefect, you will. Shego shows up at the pub a little after nine, still slightly damp and exhausted after a long swim - she's got one visit above decks per week so she might as well make it count. When she sees Prefect she gives him a half-smile and a little wave.]

Hey. How's it going?

[Prefect shoots Shego a somewhat relieved smile, and gives her a little wave back.]

Hi Sister! It's going... ah...

[He tilts his head slightly, thinking.]

...good in parts. I found out that Barron is excellent at networking, and is a very quick worker. On the other hand, he is not a very good liar, and when I put him in zero, people get turned back to normal.

Huh.

[She's already got a cocktail glass in front of her - she drinks cocktails sometimes, shut up - and circles the rim with a finger thoughtfully.]

...seriously, Prefect, why does he still have his powers? I mean - I know, I get it, having powers does not make you evil and taking them away won't make you better. I know that, I'm living it. But his powers are....so creepy. I don't know how nobody's been out for your blood yet.

[Prefect goes around the bar and... after considering the wide array of spirits on offer, decides to be a good boy and gets himself a coke. This done, he moves back around to join Shego, sighing as he does so.]

They're not... entirely what they were, nothing he does here will stay changed for more than a week. But... his identity... the way that his powers affect him, is quite ingrained into his daily life. Rehabilitating him without them? Making him earn them back? It might stop him from messing with people in the short term, but I think that in the long term it would nullify any progress I could make with him. The moment he got them back, he'd slip back into the same lifestyle as he has now, and the same way of coping that he has now.

[He turns the coke glass around on the table, idly.]

For now? All he seems to have done is... tried to make friends. It's not okay. I'm definitely not saying that it's okay, but no one's gotten hurt, and I honestly think that if I can change the way that he approaches his powers then that would be the way to get him to actually meaningfully change here, Sister.

I know that if he does anything worse than he's done already, then I'll have to either get the Admiral to restrict them further, or take them away entirely. I do know that. But I don't think I can justify doing something that could be so damaging to him, when he's not really hurt anyone with them since he came on board.

[Shego considers this. It does mostly make sense? She knows hers is a very different case because she mostly sees her powers as a tool rather than a part of her identity. On the other hand, she feels like Prefect's working with a limited definition of 'hurt', because she would be more 'hurt' by being made somebody's BFF for a week than she would be by having her ass kicked by someone with asskicking superpowers.

But, she didn't come here to start a fight.]

I get it.

[She sips her drink.]

So. Were you around for the flood? I don't think I saw you, were you ever actually a kid or do they grow you guys in tubes or something?

[Prefect is working with a limited definition of hurt. He's not including Barron sending Buffy to try and beat him up in this, either. But man, he doesn't really want to talk any more about Barron.]

I was a kid once. I just... I'd outgrown my curiosity, at the age that I became during the flood. So I just ended up alphabetizing my room for two days.

[It had actually been pretty satisfying.]

[She's just going to snicker quietly into her glass.]

And here I was thinking it'd already be alphabetized.

I have grown lax in my filing techniques lately, Sister. It had fallen into disarray.

Did everyone's least favorite creepy mind-alterer even attempt to check up on you?

Not that I recall. He has some memory problems though, it probably didn't really occur to him.

Huh. [At least that makes for some compelling poetic justice. She throws back the rest of her drink, then sort of wretchedly says:] I spent half of it pretending I was a superhero so I could look after somebody I didn't need to. I dunno.

[Prefect drinks some of his coke, considering this. Before offering, a little lamely:] Don't be offended by this or anything, Sister? But it kind of seems like you're quite good at that. [He takes another little sip, before adding:] Who were you looking after?

Re: Spam

[identity profile] gotgreenmagic.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Cissie. The blonde chick, into archery? She's one of Kirk's friends. [She offers this up as a possible explanation as to her caring rather than 'she's Tim's friend' or 'I was curious to see who she was before she became the sort of nutjob who'd date Sylar', which are both closer to the truth. She gives Prefect a sidelong glance.] Whaddya mean, 'quite good at that'? Did I develop a reputation as a caregiver while my back was turned?

Re: Spam

She was Beatty's warden! I know her. [Prefect chirps up! He likes Cissie. Then he shakes his head.] I meant... [He kind of meant that between looking after tiny Kirk and tiny Cissie, he has KIND OF NOTICED that she keeps an eye out for him, because he's a bit of a man child. But he suspects that she wouldn't thank him for saying so.] ...I just meant that aside from the occasional cat-burgling and beating deserving people up, you seem to be pretty responsible when the Barge gets crazy.

[Pause]

If I turned into... I don't know, a small animal, or... suffered from brain damage? Then I'd trust you to either remember to give me access to food or get me to the infirmary.

Re: Spam

[identity profile] gotgreenmagic.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[She shrugs.] Yeah. I would. Same for Tim, Parker, Kirk - anybody else I care about. I guess Cissie's more an acquaintance but - evidently it still counts.

[She hops over the bar rather than circling around it to fix herself another drink.]

I'm just...not crazy, is all. I would prefer that my friends not starve to death or stick their fingers into electrical sockets or whatever.
